Dean recently served as Chief Technology Officer for Achieva, a Silicon Valley education software startup dedicated to improving college entrance options for high school students. Recruited to the executive team by venture partners, Dean introduced a new business vision: re-invent and multiply product offerings, grow the customer base while simultaneously lowering costs, dramatically increase valuation, and position the company for sale. Attracting top engineering talent, Dean’s architecture team built a cloud-based heuristic SAT test engine and Learning Management System for the rapid production of award-winning*, media-rich eLearning products. As sales surged, Dean and team successfully sold Achieva’s technology innovations and agile organization to Kaplan, the education industry’s largest provider of online courseware.
Prior to the Achieva-Kaplan merger, Dean led a complex turnaround as CTO at Reel.com, the industry’s first eCommerce retailer of entertainment media, movie reviews, videos, and DVD’s. After rapidly stabilizing technical operations, he scaled the eCommerce engine for triple digit growth to over 1 Million online customers. Having resolved the most critical technical challenges, Dean led an engineering task force with Sprint to pioneer an early-industry “Video-on-Demand” film mastering studio, delivering movies digitally over high-speed fiber-optic networks to homes. Reel.com was acquired by Hollywood Video.
During an era of Silicon Valley innovation, Dean founded Network Training Inc. in 1992, which he grew into a profitable, Bay Area IT consulting practice, providing network engineering and technology education to Visa, Bank of America, Blue Cross, Charles Schwab, ADP, Microsoft, HP, and numerous other Fortune 500 companies. Continuing a nearly two-decade relationship, Dean often represents Microsoft on their strategic consulting engagements and frequently teaches emerging Microsoft technologies to audiences worldwide.
Dean’s early career experience featured a variety of technical and management positions, including Senior Engineering Manager for PacTel InfoSystems (now AT&T), where he designed and built campus-scale data networks over telecom PBX fiber-optic WANs. Dean’s distinctive career began as the principal engineer in his family-owned education software firm (with Dr. Dean Samuels Sr., his father and school superintendent). This unique, dawn-of-industry experience provided the foundation of Dean’s career-long affinity for entrepreneurial adventure, advances in education, and technology innovation.
Dean lives in the Silicon Valley bay area with his wife Lori and their four children, where he composes variations on acid-jazz piano in his home recording studio, still dreaming of a someday-first album.
